My picky dog won't eat his food and keeps throwing up. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 1 year and 1 month old | 9 lbs

I have a year old Terrier Mix and he is on his fifth dog food. Right now he is eating Blue Buffalo small breed dry food. He has always been a picky eater. He only eats it like every other day. Right now it’s been 3 days since eating a whole bowl of food. Just nibbles on it. What should I do? Start on wet food or change it again? Please help if you can. Just want to know what’s next step. He sometimes throws up because his stomach is empty just don’t know why he just eats. Thanks for your help.

Hello, I know this has been frustrating for both of you. In some cases, the reason a pet vomits or has a poor appetite may be secondary to an underlying disease process such as inflammation in the intestines, pancreas, liver or kidneys. I would advise you to have Chewie examined by a veterinarian and discuss deworming, bloodwork and an abdominal ultrasound prior to another food change. If you do elect to change his diet, I would advise you to feed him a novel protein or hydrolysis protein diet such as Royal Canin duck and potato or venison and green pea. You can obtain an Rx from your veterinarian to buy food in a local pet store or possibly purchase directly from the veterinary hospital.
