What's the best food for 10-week-old kittens? Why is their poop wet?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 2 months and 14 days old

I adopted 2 Kittens ( 10 weeks old now ). The previous owners were feeding them Royal Canin Persian Adult food, Me-O Chicken & Veggies along with Royal Canin Kitten Instinctive food. Should I switch I've the Kittens to all kitten food from Royal Canin. Personally I would prefer giving the Kittens all Natural food. What is the recommended food quantity and food type I should give them daily. One of the Kittens stools is not firm(Dry) it's a little wet and loses shape when picked up. Is this ok?

I am a fan of Royal Canin, so yes I would recommend switching your new kittens to all Royal Canin. It's a very high quality food, and because they have veterinary nutritionists on staff, you are assured the food is balanced to meet your kittens's nutritional needs. I would feed them according to the instructions on the bag. It could be one of your kittens has intestinal worms, causing its stool to be a little wet. These are common in kittens. Make sure both your kittens are up to date on their deworming treatments. I hope this helps, and enjoy your new kittens!

At 10 weeks of age your kitten should be able to eat kibble just fine. You should not need to add canned food to her diet unless you want to do it occasionally as a snack/treat. You may want to moisten the food with water before feeding her. Soft food can certainly lead to softer stools but you should make sure she has been dewormed too. I hope this helps. I would suggest to withhold food for the next 8-12 hours and then start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. It will take a while for them to settle and soft feces can be quite normal the first 2 weeks. There is no reason why you would give more moist food, so it is good if they get both. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. Yes, canned food can give kittens diarrhea. I recommend moistening kitten kibble with water to make it softer to eat. Then adding a very small amount of wet kitten food gradually once the stools are firm again should not cause diarrhea. I highly recommend feeding either Royal Canin or Hill's Science diet. Both are high quality foods that cats seen to enjoy. In order to avoid GI upset, make the switch slowly. Mix together her old food and her new food, and over the course of two weeks, slowly increase the amount of new food and decrease the amount of old food until she is eating the new food only.

The most common reason for diarrhea in kittens is worms. I suspect the vet will give them a general dewormer at their exam. I suggest you stop any milk replacer or milk products if you are using them as they can also cause diarrhea. At 5 weeks they can eat solid foods and don't need milk. Congratulations on your new kitten! So far, it seems sounds like you're doing everything correctly. Pooping twice a day is completely normal. I also recommend feeding twice daily, just as you are doing. Brands that I commonly recommend feeding are Science Diet, Purina ProPlan and Royal Canin. If you choose to make a change in her diet, do so by gradually mix in the old and new foods together over 5-7 days. You can choose to feed exclusively wet or dry food, or a mix of both. This is largely a matter of personal preference. Be sure that you are feeding a food formulated for kittens or "all life stages" to aid in growth. She should continue to eat kitten food until 1 year of age, at which point you can transition to an adult cat food. Enjoy your new little kitten!

At four weeks of age, they should start pooping on their own and being weaned onto kitten food. To help them wean and to get used to dry food, I would soak a high quality kitten formulated dry food in warm water until soft. Then mix that with kitten formula such as KMR to make a mush the consistency of oatmeal. Over the next two weeks, gradually increase the amount of dry kitten food and decrease the amount of water and KMR you use until they are eating the dry kitten food only. As for not pooping on their own, give it another week to see if they become more independent. If they don't, have them seen by a vet. Best of luck.

Is this normal poop from a kitten? She is 6 weeks old she has been eating adult cat food could that be why she’s having diarrhea?!
Hi there and thank you for using Boop by Petco! It appears that there is more mucous than I would like to see in the stool. This could be due to the diet and it could also be due to intestinal parasites. I would recommend switching food to a kitten food and see if that helps. If it does not improve and continues to progress, I would recommend having a veterinarian test her poop sample to check for intestinal parasites. I hope this helps! At the age of 6-7 weeks, these kittens are completely capable of eating dry kitten food. Perhaps this would help to regulate the stools and firm them up. You can do a combination of soft kitten food and the dry kibble.
