Cats need higher amounts of protein because they are obligate carnivores, and they should have 25-30% protein in their diet. As for carbs, the average dry food contains between 35-50% of carbs. Dried egg product is fine. I hope this helps!

Indoor cats and outdoor cats should get the same amount of protein. It depends on the food you are feeding them. I recommend a high quality diet of dry food or canned food, fed twice daily. If you find your indoor cat is gaining weight, try a food formulated for indoor cats for those are live indoors only. Good luck, i hope this helps!

As long as the minimum Crude protein percentage is above 26%, it should be adequate for cats. However, you rarely need to worry about this, because cat foods have to meet this requirement in order to be approved by AAFCO standards. Grains are OK for cats and make contain some essential nutrients, so I wouldn't worry too much about them. Grain-free foods usually substitute the grain with some other source of carbohydrate, so it really would not make much of a difference which food was eaten. I, like many other veterinary professionals, find the grain-free movement quite misleading and unsupported by the facts. It's essentially just marketing and should not be taken seriously at this time.

Why do cat food products have such a low percentage of meat? Some cat food products include grains and vegetables, is this healthy and safe for them? Should I feed my cat on a 100% meat diet if I can afford to?
If you would like to feed a homemade diet, I would recommend using a website like balanceit.com or discussing a recipe with a veterinary nutritionist. Completely meat diets won't be balanced for all of their micronutrient needs. Wet cat foods usually have higher protein concentrations than dry food. Purina Pro Plan makes a good dry cat food that has 45% protein, my cat loves it! In the wild, cats don't eat just meat. They will snack on grass and eat entrails of herbivores, which give them fiber and grains.

I have two beautiful cat brothers- they just turned a year old. I got all their shots, deworming etc through vetco. they have also been neutered. Recently I heard I should be feeding them strictly wet food not kibble- is this true? for some reason
Canned food is recommended because it has a high moisture content and it is a high protein/low carb diet. Cats are obligate carnivores, which means they require protein (of animal origin) and very little to no carbs in their diet. In the wild, the only carbs ingested are typically those eaten by small prey. Many dry foods, by their very nature, are high in carbs which can lead to obesity. You can continue to feed a dry food as long as you choose a grain free or low carb product. Keep them up to date on vaccines, use monthly parasite prevention, feed a healthy diet and provide plenty of exercise and love. Probiotics can be used to promote gut health and won't harm them, however if they have no GI issues then you can skip them.

How many grams of protein should I feed my cat? What is the healthy amount? I keep hearing that Blue buffalo has way too much.
Unfortunately, I do not think you are going to get a consensus or simple answer to this question. The short answer is that we think the most biologically appropriate food for a domesticated cat is a mouse. And that is quite high in protein. In a young cat like Autumn wihout any health issues, I do not have a problem feeding a high protein food. Cats are obligate carnivores and generally thrive on a high protein diet. One thing you have to think about is that if the food is lower in protein, then it will have to be higher in carbohydrates and/or fat. Again, since cats are obligate carnivores, they are not able to utilize carbohydrates effectively and will often just gain weight on foods that are higher in carbohydrates. You also have to consider if you are comparing dry food or canned food. Dry food will "appear" to have more protein than canned food on the label, but often canned food is actually higher in protein. Should carbohydrates be limited in a cat’s diet? Does a cat’s health benefit most from dry, Frozen, raw, or freeze dried food?
I think a cat's diet should consist of mostly protein but you shouldn't eliminate all carbs. I think a mixture of canned and either freeze dried or dry food is healthiest. I would stay away from raw diets as I have seen many cats get really ill from salmonella and similar bacteria that can contaminate raw diets. I hope this helps!

Great question! I actually recommend a food with grains in it. Grains are good for cats, and they provide a lasting source of energy and fuel. Grain free is a marketing ploy and fad, and there is no proof at all that grains are bad for cats. Having a diet with grains in it will provide Kitty with more fuel for his high energy life. Brands I recommend including Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, or Iams. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

My persian wouldnt eat wet food...he is very used to Royal Canin Persian foods nd thinks nothing of wet food...How do i get him to eat? I heard they do not need the carbohydrates in dry food so im worried.
Carbs are fine for cats! If Peanut like the Royal Canin Persian food, then give it to him. I have a Persian cat as well, and that's what I feed him. He loves it as well. Keep feeding him the Royal Canin Persian :-)

Crude protein is just the name of the laboratory method used to chemically analyze and determine the amount of the protein nutrient. It does not refer to the quality of that nutrient. Look at the "Guaranteed Analysis" on the packaging for more information. If you can post again with the name of the food you are feeding we can maybe help you better. From what you described it sounds like the food you are feeding is just fine. Remember, these are pet cats, not wild animals. Their protein requirements would be lower than that of a wild cat.

High protein. low carb diets such as royal canin diabetic or hills m/d are very effective in helping to regulate blood sugar and oreventing glucose spikes in diabetics. If underweight, a highly digestible intestinal diet can also be helpful until body condition is restored.
