Dog bit near anus, quick bump. Can I use Benadryl or ointment?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boston Terrier | Female | unspayed | 5 years and 7 months old | 19 lbs

I took Sushi out back to go potty this afternoon. As she was going, something bit her near her anus- I didn’t see what it was, but she jumped. About a minute later there was a bump in the area she got bit. It got big in less than a minute, then subsided. It’s been a couple hours and doesn’t seem to have changed much. She is eating fine, acting normal, but wondering what it is and how we can treat her if needed (maybe give her a Benadryl, or apply antibiotic ointment?)

That is really strange! From looking at it, it almost looks like an infected anal gland, but since it came up some quickly, this is doubtful. I would try some Benadryl twice a day to see if it improves. If it isn't better by tomorrow, I would have your vet look at it. If it is an infection anal glad and it isn't treated, it could rupture which is very painful. I hope this helps!
