Can my cat with urinary stones eat non-prescription wet food?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 15 lbs

My male cat has urinary tract issues (had a stone blockage) and now is on prescription cat food. He eats both prescription wet and dry food. Most of the food he eats is dry food. It is ok to give him non-prescription wet food if the bulk of what he eats is prescription dry food?

Unfortunately it is recommend to not give any other types of food besides the prescription food. If you want variety I would talk to your vet about get a prescription for a different company like royal canin, science diet, or even Purina. They all have diets for urinary stone problems. If you feed an OTC wet foot, even in small doses, could increase his risk of forms more stones or sediment causing him to block. I’m sorry!
