Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | unneutered | 8 months and 15 days old | 75 lbs
We just de-wormed our 9-month puppy last week, and then today when we got home from work to let him out of his kennel, he had explosive diarrhea all over the kennel. He had been whining during the night and was let out to go to the bathroom twice in the middle of the night and again at 6:30 this morning, but didn't go poo any of those times. Besides a similar explosion last month (March 13), he hasn't had any inside accident for months. Nothing has changed in his diet, so what caused it?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Rusty. There are many causes of diarrhea in a young dog. With the history of the recent deworming medication, he could experience the diarrhea due to intestinal parasites dying off. Other causes are stress (does not have to be anything you percieve as stressful), diet such as you mentioned, a bacterial overgrowth or a more serious internal problem. If it was due to the dewormer, it should resolve shortly. If his symptoms persist, he will need to see his veterinarian. It is generally safe to withhold food for 18-24 hours to rest the GI tract. Be sure to provide plenty of fresh water though so he does not become dehydrated. I hope this information helps!
