My puppy has parvo. Is her poop color & smell normal during recovery?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 2 months and 1 day old | 5 lbs

Maggie has parvo and has been on meds for almost 3 days. Her poop has been greenish yellowish and very runny for the 4 days we've had her. As of yesterday it's becoming more dense but is changing to this browinish orange color. There is no tint of red like blood, and the flakes are from the boiled white rice. Also the metal smell is diminishing and turning into almost a sweeter smell..? sorry my camera qaulity is kind of poor but I hope you can help. Thanks.

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. As with any GI disease / infection, the color of the stool can vary widely. After an infection like Parvo virus, the stool can take some time to return to a normal consistency and healthy color. I would consider adding a probiotic such as Purina Fortiflora, which can be found online quite easily. As long as it continues to firm up and the consistency / color improves, Maggie is heading in the right direction. I would feed the bland diet you are feeding for at least 3 days beyond the resolution of the soft stool. I hope this helps and hope that Maggie continues to recover! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.

The smell can be normal as can the mucous/yellow color. It can last for a couple weeks. I suggest you start him on a probiotic that may help correct the bacterial imbalance in his GI tract. https://www.allivet.com/p-1130-purina-pro-plan-veterinary-diets-fortiflora-dog-supplement-box-of-30.aspx?SearchTerm=fortiflora+Auto
