My 6-month-old husky puppy is always hungry. How much food and treats?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Siberian Husky | Male | neutered | 5 months and 27 days old | 39 lbs

My husky puppy Zeus will be 6 months old next week and weighs in at 39 pounds. We just upped him to 3 cups of dry foid a day because he seems to always be hungry. He goes for about 4-5 mike walks about 6 days a week and always plays a lot of fetch. I know I’m feeding more than the food label tells me to, but is that acceptable here? Also I’m not sure about how much room I have to work with regarding treats. Any advice would really help. Thanks!!!

Also, just watch him closely for rapid weight gain. As he gets older and since he is neutered, he may need his food decreased to help maintain a healthy body weight. You want to be able to easily feel his ribs and still be able to see a waist. You should not be able to see his ribs or readily feel his hip bones - This usually indicates they are too thin.

I think it is perfectly safe to increase his food to two cups twice a day (4 cups total) since he is so active. He may still act like he is always hungry but keep in mind that this may be just his personality and not necessarily that he is truly hungry. Some dogs live to eat and other just eat to live. The dogs that eat everything in front of them MUST have their foods measured otherwise they commonly become obese. As far as treats, I think giving him treats when he goes to the bathroom is fine and then using small training treats while you are teaching him tricks are fine. I would not just give him treats for no reason as this can also cause too much calorie intake. He would is handsome and you are doing a great job! I hope this helps!
