My dog's anal glands fill every 3 weeks. What can I do to help?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Bichon Frise | Male | neutered | 3 years and 7 months old | 13 lbs

I give my bisson cosamax. He eats boiled chicken and a little dry dog food moistened with water. Do I need vitamins too? His anal glands are full every 3 weeks. Is there something I can doc for that?

Sammy should be eating mainly dog food with just a tiny bit of chicken to stimulate his appetite if necessary. Make sure the chicken is mixed in well so he can't pick out the pieces and leave the dog food. One teaspoon of plain canned pumpkin (NOT pie filling). Can be mixed into the food once or twice daily. The added fiber may help keep the anal glands emptied. Normally, they are emptied during the act of defecation. If this doesn't help, you'll need to take Sammy to your veterinarian or groomer regularly to have his anal glands expressed (emptied) to prevent infection.
