My dog's heat cycle is almost over. When should I get her spayed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 1 month old | 60 lbs

Hello! A little over a week ago I noticed my pup wanting to pee more and licking herself. Tuesday she was really licking herself swollen and pretty red blood spots a lot. She had a few small gushes Sunday evening of clearish blood. Yesterday was pinkish Brown blood today there hasn’t been any spots or hardly any licking. Could she be almost done? I am ready to get her spayed but wanna wait until she is almost done to schedule. she is a year and this is her second heat cycle. Thank you.

There is quite a bit of variability as to how long a female dog will have discharge associated with her heat cycle, but it is typically 7-10 days. I would recommend contacting your veterinarian about when they would recommend spaying her. We like to wait until the blood supply to the uterus has decreased after a heat cycle before spaying a female dog, so we will often wait 1-2 months after heat cycle. I hope that was helpful and answered your question. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
