My pet is sick, but I can't afford vet care. How can I get help?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

took my pup for wellness check and asked vet to plz check for mange/mites. after the check he wanted to give meds for 'possible allergy(he wanted 400 for visit<40> plus meds) to prescribe 4 kinds of meds guessing as no real tests (blood, skin) were done.I asked several more times and he said he didn't think it was serious.. now it's looking worse and I feel she's in pain. what if anything can i do as now due to this visit I have 0 money and dont want to go back to the same vet.

That looks pretty bad. I'd take him into another vet for a second opinion. If paying for a vet is an issue, you can see if your vet accepts payment plans, if there is a low cost clinic in your area, or you can apply for Care Credit online. There is also an organization called Red Rover that give grants for treatment of sick animals, and you can see if you qualify for one of their grants. Best Friends also has a list of resources that offer financial assistance on their website. http://www.humanesociety.org/animals/resources/tips/trouble_affording_pet.html?credit=web_id91754962 https://www.redrover.org https://www.carecredit.com http://bestfriends.org/resources/financial-aid-pets http://lessonsfromaparalyzeddog.com/when-pet-owners-cant-afford-veterinary-bills/ http://www.dogheirs.com/resources-affordable-veterinary-care/
