What are the risks of buying a puppy with a double inguinal hernia?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I was about to purchase an 8 week PUG puppy from a very respected breeder yesterday. When i got there, we noticed a small bump in the goin. The breeder said to her surprise she has an inguinal hernia. I didn't leave with the puppy as she needed to take it back to the vet that provided the medical release. Today she called and told me the the puppy actually has a double hernia. Both sides. Now i'm nervous about spending big $$ and worried about future stress with a brand new puppy.

Hernias are congential, hereditary defects so if you were interested in using this dog for breeding I was say absolutely do not purchase him. Inguinal hernias are much more serious than umbilical hernias. Surgical repair of these hernias has a high failure rate and it he may need to have surgery a couple times before it is completely fixed. I would not recommend you buy this puppy. So sorry but I think you can probably find a puppy with less problems elsewhere. Hope this helps. Great question!

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question. A hernia can be fixed when you have your puppy spayed. It's a pretty quick and relatively easy fix during a spay, and your vet can give you the estimate of the cost. Puppies who have hernias should never be bred because it's inherited. It should be fine to get her, just have her spayed and the hernias fixed at the same time. I hope this helps.
