My cat scratched his head open. Does he need a vet or will it heal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Russian Blue | Male | neutered | 20 lbs

My cat scratched his head open. He did it before about a year ago, we took him to the vet and they gave him a shot and said it should heal on it's own. Should I call and take him in for this? Or should it heal on it's own? I'm worried and don't want him to be in pain.

Poor Clyde! This looks like a hot spot from possibly scratching and he could be scratching at his ears if they are also infected. I would recommend to have him looked by your vet. It could heal on its own with some ointment like Neosporin and a cone collar, but I would be concerned that something more is going on with that ear or his allergies to cause these types of wounds to begin with. Your vet will be able to get him started on the proper meds and treatment to help him feel better and hopefully prevent this from happening again. You can also give some Benadryl to help with any itching. It may not be strong enough to help though. Again, your vet can prescribe something stronger. I hope this helps! https://www.petcoach.co/canigive/cat/benadryl/
