My kitten has tapeworms again after treatment, why is this happening?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 3 months and 4 days old | 2 lbs

my kitten had fleas about a month ago and was treated with an at home treatment and i haven’t seen any since. but he had tapeworm about a week ago. i went to a pop up vet and got his first round of shots and they gave me a liquid worm medicine to put on his back behind his collar and within 24 hours i didn’t see any more tapeworm segments (this was last wednesday that i gave him the medicine). today i woke up and noticed more tapeworm segments on his behind. how could he get tapeworm again?

You may want to double check that the medication they had you apply treats tapeworms. Another possibility is that Peter re-infected himself with tapeworms. In cats, tapeworms are contracted by ingesting fleas during grooming. It would be best to keep him on a flea preventative year-round. You can get a dewormer that states it treats tapeworms OTC at the pet store. Something like this: https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/bayer-tapeworm-dewormer-tablets-for-cats
