Dog's patellar luxation: Can supplements avoid surgery for knee pain?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Male | unneutered | 2 years and 4 months old | 11 lbs

Hello, my dog Miki ( 2.5yo maltese) recently injured his knee and the vet diagnosed it with patellar luxation, between 1st and 2nd degree. Miki seems to be in some pain but can generally walk, he sometimes limps. The vet did not suggest surgery and only gave him bone and joint supplements. Can this go away on its own with those supplements or is it better to consider surgery?

Hello. Therapy is dependent on clinical signs, severity of the luxation, concurrent skeletal deformity & the age of the animal. Mild to moderate luxations with some pain may respond well with conservative therapy such as rest & non steroidal anti-inflammatory medications. These are your Grade 1-2 luxations. Surgery may be considered if the lameness last more than 3 weeks or there are multiple episodes of lameness. A Grade 2 could fit into the surgical category if there are ongoing episodes of pain & lameness, and surgery is recommended for Grade 3 & 4 luxations. So, you might want to have a referral to an orthopedic surgeon if Miki's pain & lameness persists. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
