My dog's ear is painful with pus and black debris. Is it an infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 4 years and 7 months old

My dog has probably an ear infection in it right ear. He tilts his head, yellowish pus comes out, when I clean it there's sand coming out, but he does feel little better after cleaning. However it starts again the next day, if I touch or press his ear even gently, it hurts him....and also there are black regions inside his ear which do not seem to go on cleaning.

I'm sorry that Mike is having trouble with this! It sounds like he probably needs a prescription medication to clear up the infection. Take him to the vet and they can advise you based on their exam and any lab tests regarding the medication needed to clear the infection. Thank you for asking Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
