Dog has red, swollen ear with pus, head tilt. Is it an infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 10 years and 9 months old | 50 lbs

We think my dog may have an ear infection but money is an issue. His ear is swollen, red and has white puss coming from the canal of his ear. He also tilts his head and scratches at his ear and occasionally whines. Thank you.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is likely due to an ear infection. It is very important that this is treated as soon as possible as this is causing him pain. You may clean the ear with an ear cleaner you can get at your pet store but that will not be enough to treat this. I recommend that you have Beau evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Your veterinarian would be able to check what type of infection is present and treat accordingly. Usually this resolves with topical therapy. Good luck and have a good day!
