My dog's jaw locks and trembles when yawning. Should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 36 lbs

My 1 year old lab-beagle mix has a jaw that locks up and trembles whenever she yawns. Have you ever heard of something like this happening to other dogs? I'm thinking about waiting a few more days to see if this continues before taking her to the vet. This just started this evening, and she is still eating and drinking.

This is a quite rare presentation. In terms of differentials this may be due to an inflammation of the temporomandibular joint, dental problems, or sometimes even early stage ear infections (in the inner or middle ear). A clinical examination at your local veterinarian is essential to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately.
