My dog's scratched nipple has dark, greyish skin. Should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Female | unspayed | 3 years and 7 months old | 9 lbs

So my dog either got scratched by something on her nipple or scratched it herself. And I didn’t notice till maybe the day after, but this has happened before and we just let her lick it and it was fine in a couple days. Then today I woke up and her skin is slightly Greyish blackish around the scratched nipple. Should I go to the vet?

Hi, and thanks for your question. Even though a picture would help to understand better the underlying cause, this presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) may be needed to solve the problem. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking (if any).
