My turtle has worms, diarrhea, and won't eat. Is it his food?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Reptile | Aquatic Turtle | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 7 months old

I have a 1 year old turtle and I have had him for a few months. I keep his tank clean and give him food on a daily basis. He has a basking place and light. I recently found worms in his tank and I'm concerned if they're from his food or him bc I never noticed them before, I have also noticed he's having diarrhoeadia and hasn't been eating alot. I cleaned his tank and threw away the new food I had given him. I would furthermore like to know how to treat this and whether this is caused by his food

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is most likely a water quality issue. I would suggest starting with a deep clean of the tank and changing his diet to something else in case he is not eating as well and is having diarrhea because of the diet he is currently on. If he does not eat better with the new diet and his diarrhea does not improve, I would suggest you consider going to your veterinarian who can test the water, gather more information and proceed with more specific recommendations. Hopefully things improve with this first step. Best of luck!
