My dog has a large, soft, painless lump on his paw. Should I worry?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 3 months and 15 days old | 30 lbs

Hi i have a 14 month old shepherd/rottweiler mix named rex he in the past couple days has started growing this lump on the right foot it has gotten very big and feels like it is water filled, no pain for rex as its being touched or him using the foot. He acts as if its not there, this worries me as he is my service dog in training and best friend. Thanks

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This could be a benign or malignant growth. There is no way of knowing what it is just based on its appearance. Due to his young age, this may be an abscess for example. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. Good luck and have a good night!
