My dog's ear has brown discharge and he's in pain. Is it an infection?

Hi, there's something on my dog's ear like a brown discharge. Sometimes its wet, sometimes its dry. I've tried to clean his ears but it feels like he's hurting. I can't even check it. Can you please advice. As I work and no time to visit his vet. Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | 5 months and 3 days old | 3.05 lbs
