My dog is coughing and gagging. Could it be kennel cough? Vet needed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | 1 year and 1 month old | 160 lbs

My 14 month yellow lab starting mild cough/gagging starting Thursday, last night (Saturday), she had a coughing/ gagging episode with a really coarse cough. And today she’s been coughing throughout. From what I read it seems like kennel cough. She’s still herself otherwise, wants to play, get her belly rubbed, eating fine. Just being more of a suck than normal. Your suggestions? I do have a video if there’s another way I can send it to you. Does she need attention right away?

Yes, you are correct, it is most likely kennel cough. It is not an emergency but she should be seen by a vet in the next couple of days as antibiotics and cough suppressant‘s are often prescribed. ( https://www.petcoach.co/dog/condition/kennel-cough/ )
