My puppy has liquid diarrhea and a drop of blood. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Our 45lb 8 month puppy has had liquid diarrhea on/off the last 48 hours. Yesterday a drop of bright red blood appeared. Should we be concerned? Currently feeding 2 cups dry food -see pic-, 2-3 frozen carrots/day, occasional frozen peanut butter. Maybe peanut butter was causing it so we stopped that but then blood appeared we are worried now. No other health issues. Energy and appetite normal.

I really hate Blue Buffalo foods. I can't tell you how many dogs have diarrhea and intestinal issues with their foods. You need to be very careful with peanut butter as it is very high in calories and dogs get overweight eating too much of it. Also, a lot of brands contain xylitol which is toxic to dogs. Read labels carefully. I would suggest this protocol to get the diarrhea to clear up. The blood is really not a concern. It is just from straining and colonic irritation. 1. Give ONE dose of Immodium. They come in 2mg tablets. Give him 1 tablet. Please, ONE dose only or you will cause other issues. You can use generic - loperamide. 2. No food for 6 hours. Water is OK. 3. Then start feeding small amounts of a bland diet every few hours. Bland foods like: scrambled eggs, plain rice, plain pasta, boiled chicken or turkey, human baby foods (meat flavors). No butter, oil or spices on the food. No carrots, treats, etc until the diarrhea has been cleared up for at least 5 days. 4. Also, start him on a probiotic made for dogs. No human products. You can buy them at any large pet store. I would give it for a minimum of two weeks. 5. Once there has been no diarrhea for 48 hours you can transition back to the regular diet. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
