My dog has soft stool. What food helps with sensitive stomachs?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I have tried three different types of dog food (slowly weening him off one to start another) but his stool is still soft (not diarehea) but I just dont know what food to feed him. I have also tried pumpkin, I've tried white rice, brown rice and boiled chicken and not much of a difference if any. any suggestion? also his fecal exam was negative.

I have had very good luck with Purina ProPlan Sensitive Skin and Stomach helping dogs with chronic diarrhea. I would try this. Feed only this food and stop with all the other pumpkin, rice, chicken, etc. If you keep changing things and adding things then you don't know what is helping or hurting. The only other thing I would give is Fortiflora probiotic on top of the food. It's important to rule out medical causes, such as allergies or intestinal parasites. If no caused of chronic soft stool can be found, there are prescription foods that can help, such as Purina EN Fiber Balance, or even regular probiotics can make a big difference for some dogs. I'd recommend scheduling an appointment with his vet specifically to talk about this issue, and see if they recommend any testing, or would be comfortable trying a prescription food option. I hope that helps and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
