My cat's paw is swollen from a bite. Does he need an emergency vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My cat is an indoor cat but was outside in the backyard grass for a couple minutes with me when I was hanging laundry. I think he got bitten by something, because shortly after coming inside, his paw was swollen to twice its size. I gave him 1/2 a 25 mg. tablet of Benadryl about two hours ago, but the swelling is not going down. Should I take him to the emergency vet, or can I wait until tomorrow to go to the regular vet?

Poor kitty! Based on the degree of swelling you're describing, I would recommend taking him to an emergency vet tonight, if you can. I would be concerned about something potentially serious such as a snake bite, or a severe reaction to some type of sting.
