My dog is scratching his nipple and skin. Is it normal? What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Pinscher | Male | neutered | 3 years and 3 months old | 16 lbs

Is he scratching off his nipple? Is it normal? He doesn’t seem to be in any pain at all, his nails aren’t long at all and he hasn’t been excessively scratching his chest. He’s been scratching around the top of his paws lately which I’m assuming is normal being that I walk him three times a day every day but he doesn’t seem to be having any problems at all. He’s eating, playing and has been acting normal. What should I do?

It's possible he accidentally caught the nipple while scratching. I do however see a few rad places on his skin and it looks to be some sort of a rash. It's likely Dester was scratching at the rash. Pets can get rashes for many reasons including allergies, skin mites, flea bites, ringworm (which humans can get) or a bacterial infection. You can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, this can help improve the skin health. You may also try changing his diet to something like Royal Canin or Nutro as they are aimed at skin health. You can wash the lesions with soap once a day and rinse well (don't wash his whole body, just those spots). Protect the areas from licking or scratching (he may need to wear an elizabethan collar). If they don't start looking better within about a week or if they get worse, have him examined by his veterinarian who may prescribe medications. Best of luck and please feel free to post any additional questions.
