My dog's eye is red and irritated with green discharge. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hello, I have a German Shepard husky. I noticed yesterday his left eye had some eye boogers in the morning some were soft and green and others were hard. His eye is not oozing but does look red and irritated. Please advise. Could it be infected and does he need to be seen ?

An eye infection is very likely but other conditions can cause an irritated sclera like a corneal scratch, dry eye or glaucoma. I recommend to have Ace examined by the veterinarian. The vet may stain the eye to look for a scratch. Make sure Ace is not rubbing at the eye because this could make it worse. He may need to wear an elizabethan collar. I hope this helps and that Ace gets better quickly. Please feel free to post any additional questions.
