My new hamster has diarrhea and a wet bum. What can I do for wet tail?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Hamster | Female | unspayed | 25 days old

I believe my hamster has wet tail disease. She is new to the home, only adopted her about 12 days ago. She was doing good but last night I noticed diarrhea and her bum was wet. She’s now making loud chirps/noises in her cage and it nipping at my hand (NEVER did that, she has a great temperament) so I’m afraid that she doesn’t feel good. What can I do to help her? I’ve been putting hamster vitamin drops in her water, does that help? Would “wet tail” drops from a pet store help with the diarrhea?

Wet Tail is a bacterial infection that can be very serious if not treated promptly. The cornerstone of treatment is to limit stress since that is the precipitating factor. Keep the cage clean and warm. Ideally, antibiotics should be dispensed by your veterinarian. Some wet tail drops contain neomycin which may be effective in treatment. If symptoms persist for more than 24 hours after beginning treatment though, have her seen by your vet.
