Is it safe to delay my 2-month-old puppy's shots and deworming?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I purchased a German Shepherd from a local breeder last week. The breeder told me to wait as long as you can for the 2 month old puppy's shots and deworming so that it doesn't suffer so much. Is that what you as a vet. recommend? When should I bring in our puppy for his shots and deworming?

No, that is not recommended. Puppies need their vaccinations/deworming at 8, 12 and 16 weeks of age and they should be done on time so that he builds the proper immunity. This has nothing to do with suffering. Vaccinations do not cause suffering. The pain of being vaccinated is negligible when compared with the obvious benefits. With dogs, the vaccines are given under the skin and not in the muscle (like humans) so the vaccinations are rarely that painful for them.
