Why is my cat losing hair above her eye? Is it normal shedding?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Russian Blue | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 3 months old

My cat has a small patch of fur above her left eye that’s thinning out. She turned 1 in April, she’s a Russian blue, she’s eating and drinking fine and using her litter box normally. Should I be concerned or is it just extra summer shedding?

This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). There is some redness underneath the fur, which may indicate an inflammation and not only a physiological shedding. A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths (be careful not to touch the eye with any of these solutions). Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any scratching (if any).
