Dog scratching non-stop, no fleas. Should I apply flea prevention early?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 4 years and 5 months old

Ellie has been scratching her neck, head, chest, and near the base of her tail for 2 weeks. We don’t see any fleas/mites, and areas are only a little red. But we’ve seen mites outside from rain. No flaking, just 2 small scabs. She got a bath last week but itching still continued. She is due for flea/tick application in a week. Would it be okay to apply early to rule out any kind of itching from pests? We also washed her collar and harness in detergent she’s plenty used to, but still scratching.

Every company has different rules regarding early application and you will need to check with the maker of the flea prevention you’re using. If she continues to itch, I recommend to switch your flea prevention. Typically the oral products such as Simparica work best and you can discuss this with your veterinarian. Adding an omega-3 fatty acid supplement for pets to her diet may also help. Antihistamines may also help to decrease the itching but you will need to discuss that with her veterinarian since online veterinarians are prohibited from discussing human medication usage in pets. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.
