My cat got sick from flea meds. How do I get rid of fleas effectively?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 3 years and 11 months old | 11 lbs

I recently rescued a stray kitten. I foolishly believed after bathing her I had gotten all fleas. Now my 2 adult cats are infested. I e treated them topically and orally. Although he is much better now for about 8 days sonny was completely lethargic barely ate or drank and acted as if it hurt to be touched. Was this a reaction to meds? I have seen flea dirt still and scratching . How do I get rid of fleas if he did have a reaction to meds?

Poor Sonny. I can give you a flea treatment program that has always worked for me. First, I would give him Capstar. It's a one time pill that starts killing fleas within 30 minutes. Then follow up with a spot on treatment, such as Advantage or Revolution. This is a treatment that has to be used once a month. You will also have to disinfect the environment. Wash his bedding in hot soapy water, and vacuum the furniture and carpet surfaces. You can use a spray to kill fleas in the house, such as Indorex, or a flea bomb would work well to kill the fleas in the home. Best of luck.
