My cat has ear mites. Can my other pets catch them and need treatment?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 2 years and 6 months old | 7 lbs

I'm pretty sure Baby has ear mites. Her left ear has a lot of coffee ground appearance and she's been scratching, but not constantly. I've got ear mite medicine from our vet when she had them last year. Can our older cats and dogs get them off her? Should they be treated as a precaution?

Ear mites are contagious to both cats and dogs, but do not treat them just yet. You need to be sure that Baby does have ear mites, and I would not use medicine you got last year as it may be expired. Have her seen by a vet, and the vet can confirm if she has ear mites and can prescribe medication for it. You can then treat your other animals as well. Best of luck.
