My cat ate string and is throwing up. Should I take him to the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 12.2 lbs

Hello, my cat ate a piece of elastic string, like the ones you get from shoes, and he pooped some out, but we cut it so as not to bother him that much. Well, a few minutes ago he threw up white liquid with hairs in it, and I don't know if I have to take him to the vet or it'll pass.

I am sorry to hear about your concern for your kitty! If you know he ingested an object like a string or cord and he is now vomiting I would recommend a veterinary exam to check for an obstruction. We do worry especially about long skinny objects becoming a "linear foreign body" https://veterinarypartner.vin.com/default.aspx?pid=19239&id=6075371 which can be very dangerous so it is best to play it safe and have kitty examined!
