What flea & tick prevention is safe for rescue dog with skin issues?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Pinscher | Male | neutered | 3 years and 2 months old | 16 lbs

I’m taking my dog to the country 5 days from now where he will be more susceptible to fleas or ticks. We will be there for about 3-4 days. He’s a rescue I’ve had for a few months now and I don’t know much about his history. He seems to have issues with his skin around his neck so I’m afraid to put on a flea collar but I’m also afraid of the side effects of giving him oral meds because I don’t know much about his medical history. What should I do? Which brand should I use?

If you want an over-the-counter product, go with Frontline but there are issues with resistance to this product. Otherwise I recommend to call your veterinarian and discuss one of the top products such as Simparica or Nexgard. I hope this helps and enjoy your trip.
