My dog is licking lips & breathing heavy. Is he in pain or sick?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cockapoo | Male | neutered | 8 years and 7 months old | 15.1 lbs

Jeter woke me up at 4am just sitting up in bed licking his lips nonstop. I took him out potty and he peed. He came back in and layed so I could pet him. He’s been breathing heavy and the vet thinks it’s allergies. So he’s taking apoquel. he ate breakfast this morning and I’m letting his food digest before we go in our walk. Should I be concerned he’s in pain? He licked his lips a bit more this morning for a few minutes.

These signs may be due to nausea and abdominal discomfort, which may be associated with gastrointestinal inflammation. The signs seems mild at the moment and you just monitor at this stage, but more clear vomiting signs may occur later on. I would recommend to start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist in 24hour or you notice diarrhoea, vomiting, lethargy or inappetence.
