Why does my Maltese dog have dark blood and mucus in his stool?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Male | neutered | 9 years and 6 months old | 12 lbs

My Maltese dog, 9 years old has some dark blood and mucus in his stools. He has been healthy until we came to Ghana. The ver here says he may have an ulcer. He gave antibiotics, steroids, buscopan, among other things, to cover all possibilities. He continues with mucus and a little dark blood less than before. In general he seems fine, and he eats very well. He eats dry food, with a little boiled mincemeat with rice (no seasoning), 3 times a day. Any suggestions to help him?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Bloody stools can be observed with conditions such as colitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, ulcer, intestinal parasites, among many other possibilities. Since he has not improved on the therapies he is on I recommend that you have Cody reevaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They may choose to check for parasites and to start medications depending on the results. Good luck! Hoping for a speedy recovery!
