My dog has bloody diarrhea on a raw diet. What steps should I take?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 2 years and 5 months old | 70 lbs

My dog has had diarrhea for about 2 weeks now. He’s switched over to a raw diet 2 months ago. But the past couple days the diarrhea has gotten worse and there’s blood in it. His appetite is normal tho and so is his energy levels. But we’re worried. I was gonna go get some probiotics. Fast him for 12 hours and then give him some pumpkin puree and maybe get Pepcid?

Your approach is a reasonable attempt to treat him at home, but if the stools are not improving in 48 hours, you need to take him to your vet. Additionally, if he is becoming lethargic, starts vomiting or develops other symptoms, don't wait to take him in. I would strongly recommend that you discontinue the raw diet and feed him boiled chicken and white rice which is very easy to digest and easy on the GI tract. Raw diets can potentially have contaminants such as Salmonella that could be causing his current GI distress, and could be dangerous to you as well. If you really want to put him back on raw once his stools are normal, I won't tell you not to, but at least for now my medical recommendation is to give up the raw. So yes, probiotics, a 12 hour fast, pumpkin puree along with boiled chicken and white rice. Pepcid (famotidine) may be helpful as well.
