Is it necessary to deworm my 3-month-old kitten before spay surgery?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | 2 months and 9 days old | 0.15 lbs

I have a feral kitten, she had ear mites, and ringworm. So I’m sure she has worms that haven’t been treated. Do I need to get them treated before I get her spay. She’s about 3-1/2 months old.

I would definitely recommend treating for worms if she has not already been done as heavy worm burdens can lead to debility and poor wound healing which is not ideal for recovery from surgery. Check with the initial treating vet as she may have been treated with a worm and flea/mite medication initially and this should not be repeated within 4 weeks
