My dog is in pain and tired after vaccine. How to comfort her?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pembroke Welsh Corgi | Female | spayed | 6 months and 3 days old | 25 lbs

My Mia is in pain from her Lyme disease vaccine. She’s also super tired. Is there anything I can do to help comfort her? She’s only had a reaction to DHPP vaccine but she was vomiting and all that, right now she’s sore and tired. If you touch her near the shoulders she yelps.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Soreness and lethargy are common side effects from a vaccine. They are not reactions. I would try applying a cold compress over the site for 10-15 minutes every 6-8 hours as needed. If she won’t let you, just leave her alone. It should pass in about 24 hours. Please do not give any over the counter medications as there isn’t anything safe to give pets. Good luck and kisses to Mia!

Hi, Papi should be better in the following days. He probably will be a little more tired than usual as well. If he is still just as painful or sore tomorrow you can call your vet and they may prescribe him a pain med. Hope he feels better soon!
