My dog is limping with a swollen leg after playing. What's wrong?

Dog was playing catch in yard. Noticed when he came in and asked to sit he wouldn't. Limping some and holding back leg up. Leg seems a little warm and slight swollen. Laying down now and resting. No heavy panting or whining. Nose a little warm. Has laid down on leg too. Walked on it when first came in after played and ate. Is this a sprain, pulled muscle, can scratch his ear with the leg, but doesn't want to really get up

This sounds like it is possibly a torn cruciate ligament. This is the same as an ACL in a human. Keep him quiet and rest him. No running or jumping. Leash walks only. Have him evaluated when you can. They will check his knee and see how it feels. At the very least they will be able to provide pain relief.
