Why does my rat have a red lump on his eye's pupil? Is it serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Rat | Male | unneutered | 7 months and 14 days old

My rat has a red lump on the pupil of his right eye. I tried searching and can only find cases where the entire eye is Bulged out but my rats eye has a significant bump in the center sticking out. I don't know if this has anything to do with it but even before this bump happened he had been blind in the same eye. It's kind of hard to see in the photo but it is on his right eye.

This presentation may be due to a corneal injury, which is probably trying to heal right now, creating this bulge you see. The inside of the eye, likely the anterior chamber may be affected building up inflammatory cells or blood. A clinical examination at your local veterinarian would be essential to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately to try to save the eye. Unfortunately i think it is difficult to be more specific than that at this stage through the forum.
