My dog has a small lump on her shoulder. Is it a scab or tumor?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 4 years and 3 months old | 33 lbs

I was shaving my dog Mopsy and noticed a lump the size of a dime on her right shoulder. It is noticeable if you feel it, but you can't really see it. What could it be? A scab? A place where she got a vaccine? (She has not had one in a while) A tumor? Thanks.

Pets can get many types of lumps and bumps. Most of these tumors will be benign but some will be malignant and you can't tell by looks. Here is a helpful link discussing the various types of skin masses in general: https://www.petcoach.co/article/lumps-and-bumps-on-your-pet/ I always recommend to have new bumps checked out to be safe. The doctor may recommend to aspirate the mass to examine the cells under a microscope. That is one of the best ways to know what it is and if further action is needed. Hopefully it's nothing serious.
