My dog hasn't pooped in days and has foul gas. Should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 1 year and 8 months old | 19.5 lbs

My dog had a loose black stool on Saturday night with one solid dark stool. She pooped once the next day and it was brown but just a few very small pieces. Today is Monday and she hasn’t pooped since then. She is only two and we have been to the vet more with her then our last Dog of 13 years. She hasn’t pooped since very early Sunday morning and it’s late Monday night should I take her the the vet. Also when she farts it’s really strong Oder. And she usually doesn’t fart.

A vet visit is always a good idea when something is off with your dog but that being said, I’m not overly worried about one day of no defecation. If you want to try something at home first, you can feed Her 1/4 cup of canned pumpkin (not pie filling) every 4-6 hours to see if that helps. If no stool production in 24 more hours then take her. Obviously, if she is not eating, acting sick now, then she should see a vet ASAP. Hope this helps. If you want to ask more questions you’re welcome to do a private consultation where we can chat back-and-forth. That way you can ask as many questions as you like. Best wishes.
