Why does my 10-year-old dog cough like a hairball after going out?

Everytime after my dog goes outside she comes back in and acts like she’s about to cough up a hair ball but then nothing comes out, it kinda sounds like she hyperventilating. This has never happened until about a few weeks ago and I was thinking maybe it’s allergies but she is 10 years old and hasn’t experienced this until now.
