My cat has a painful lump and wound. Is it an abscess from a dog bite?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | unneutered | 7 months and 4 days old | 4 lbs

My cat became inactive since I noticed that he have a lump under his left arm that goes halfway down his chest. Also, I found a wound within that area that when I try to touch it or even when I try to lift him, he seems upset and in pain. I am just concerned since our dog plays with him a lot and seems to bite him a lot in a playful manner although Sammy seems to not enjoy it since he screams a lot. So I thought that maybe when our dog bit him, it kinda got infected that turned into an abscess.

You are correct. This sounds like an abscess. He will need oral antibiotics and sometimes surgery to open the abscess in order for this to heal. It is not something you will be able to treat at home. I suggest you get him to the vet for treatment. Best wishes.
