Cat keeps using litter box after blocked bladder. Is this normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Male | neutered

My cats been on catheter and drip for fluids for 3 days and then again for 4 days as he still couldn't pee. He came home last night had a pee in his litter tray, ate his food with 1 hypovase tablet. Hes been a good size pee this morning but after has been in and out litter tray multiple times maybe the odd drip of wee and he also had a small poo. I dont know if this is normal to keep going in litter tray after blocked bladder? Or if he was trying to poo. Is small amount blood in litter tray too?

Yes this can be normal after blockage. The urethra will be sore and sometimes spasms making them feel like they have to urinate; even though he is on the hypovase which is a drug to decrease urethral spasm. Just monitor the urine production closely. If he starts to only produce very small amount of urine or even worse, no urine at all, then he needs to get back to the vet ASAP. Hopefully they put him on a prescription diet? If you have more questions you may want to opt for a private consult with one of our vets. That way you can dialogue back and forth with them and ask as many questions as you'd like. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
