My dog has a new, painless growth on her throat. Should I worry?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Basenji | Female | spayed | 1 year and 4 months old | 20 lbs

In the last few weeks we noticed a small growth on Asha’s throat. It does not cause her any pain when we touch it but it seems to have appeared almost over night. Any idea what it could be?

It looks like a wart. With her age it may be a histiocytoma (a benign growth). The only way to truly tell what it is, is to remove it and take a biopsy of it. I would recommend having your veterinarian take a look at it. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
