Kitten sneezing and breathing hard after play. When to see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 8 months and 23 days old | 6 lbs

We adopted a 7 month old kittty from the Humane Society about a month ago. He was shy but has come around. He’s still a little skittish but doing fine. I noticed about a week ago that he’s been sneezing a little. I was playing with him with a laser pointer and noticed when he was done that he was breathing heavy. enough that I could hear him from about 5 feet away. He’s fine now that he’s calm. Should I be concerned?

Yes I would be somewhat concerned. You should never be able to hear a cat breathing. It is very common for shelter kitties to come down with an upper respiratory infection even a month later. The other possibility is asthma - common in cats. Underlying heart disease can also cause these symptoms. I suspect asthma is probably the issue. My recommendation is that you get him to a vet for an exam. ( https://www.petcoach.co/article/what-you-need-to-know-about-feline-asthma/ )
